How to train your horse to pick up hind feet calmly and positively
Переглядів 1,7 тис.3 місяці тому
This is for horses who kick, stamp, or resist picking up the hind feet. It’s also the best way to teach new, green (and usually unbalanced) horses how to pick up their hind feet easily and happily. The biggest cause of problems with hind feet lifting is that the horse isn’t in the right balance. Try standing with your hip cocked and the weight down one leg… and then pick up that foot. It’s hard...
4 Ways to Train Touching Your Horse’s Legs POSITIVELY

In this video you’ll see 4 ways to train leg touching with 4 different horses: - A 2yo appaloosa learning to stand quietly while his legs and hooves are touched. - A young foal learning about leg touch and grooming for the first time standing at a target. - A wild...

How long did it take her to get this way. I recently purchased a mare with this same issue. I’ve been lunging her but will now lunge in small circles and back up on a hill. Thanks.

Hi, first I would look for a lower value reward, we have a video on which treat to choose here: ua-cam.com/video/WIsHNHIBReo/v-deo.html&lc=UgzpNSReyWy9hMbDUlF4AaABAg I would also look at using buckets in your training to reward instead of feeding out your hand for now. This does help them stop shoving you as they get used to getting the reward in the buckets laid out.

I have a horse who does have some atrophe in the left shoulder area but she was kind of born this way. I am trying to work on her topline and see a difference in her performance; however, I want to be sure I can actually build these muscles up. As a result, she bares more weight on the right to accommodate. She is soft and subtle everywhere in her body it is just that shoulder. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Explain the prop please . What have you trained her to do- is the ball where you want her head? I was thinking of tapping the horse with a ball at the end of a whip but that’s not what you’re doing

Its a hand held target used in positive reinforcement training. Targeting is one of the most useful behaviours you can train your horse for leading, loading, de-spooking, lunging, groundwork and riding etc. However before this you would need to teach target training so that your horse understands the task and is comfortable touching a target with their nose. It's all explained in our video What is Targeting you can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/WkLcoZKbEO4/v-deo.html

Hello! I just found your videos and I really like the way you do things. I'm definitely going to try this out on my very buddy sour horses. On a slightly different topic (I just came from the video where you worked on developing the topline over the course of a few months), I don't have a sand arena or anything like that. When I try to do liberty with my horses they almost always choose the grass. I know it's probably because our relationships aren't as developed yet, but are there any exercises you'd recommend to work on this? Thank you!

Thank you for this video! My new horse had trouble picking up his hind legs, seemingly spooking out of nowhere, even though we‘ve been training picking up feet for a while now. I could‘t figure out why he kept spooking and I had to start from zero again. Your video made me realize that he only spooks when he isn‘t in a position where he can immediately pick up the foot I’m asking him to pick up. I can get him to pick up his hind legs consistently now and slowly train with him to shift his balance without hin panicking.

    • @ConnectionTraining

The gelding goes straight into panic mode. i thought over time he would get used to her leaving seeing that she comes back everytime. That is not the case, I'm just making his panic worse. When i seperate I'm going to start focusing on alleviating his stress by nuturing practices such as brushing, grooming, etc. this video really helped me understand how i can be a better horse owner.
